Do you remember when you took your first steps? How about your first kiss? How about the first time behind the wheel of a car? Then there’s starting a new job or holding your baby for the first time. Although these each of these are completely different scenarios, they all have something very much in common. They were all the first time ever doing it. And because there was much to learn, they were scary too.
Life is like that, no matter what the first time experience, it’s scary. For me, it was the one that changed my life when I had to learn how to take my first steps all over again.
When I was introduced to disability it dropped me to my knees. Crawling became my only choice, the beginning of my first times when I fell to the floor. From there I took my first steps as wobbly as a toddler. I walked those steps for so long I began to think I’d never grow up. But grow up I did.
Thinking back on my experiences I’ve come to understand that each day gave me many first times. Well, except for those that kicked my reason to get up in the ass. However, when I did get up, and began to pay attention to how my first times were making me stronger, I was the one kicking ass. The first times were in every step I made in spite of how difficult it was. Each step taught me how to take another one, another first time.
Each and every one of my first times were scary, many still are. Like, each day I get up and feel pain and wish I’d heal so I could get back into the things I love to do. But hey, each day is the first time to getting better. One day at a time, one first thing at a time.
If I’ve learned anything from my experiences, it’s that nothing is permanent in life except change. Change lead us to first times and prepare us for more, and how cool is it that change and scary first times lead us to developing experience that help us dance in this place called life.
Be well my friends. It’s okay to be scared but remember, we all have a wonderful light to brighten our way to new first times. Let it shine.

Perfect words as we walk forward in our path in life. I enjoy reading your inspiring words and reflect on all my first times and am still experiencing them now. Never give up as the view gets better and better. Thanks Cheryl
